“By going to this Summer School in London in 2009 I learnt I can achieve anything. I learnt how to adapt to a culture different from my own. I left the Summer School with a great education, awesome new friends and a completely different perspective on nursing abroad.”
Jonna Gately, 3rd year nursing student, Endicott College School of Nursing, Beverly – Massachusetts
"This programme offers a great opportunity for students to increase their understanding of the history of nursing and associated policy together with a contemporary view of nursing.London offers much healthcare history and with the School being the world’s first professional school of nursing – it provides an ideal combination for this short summer programme."
Professor Alison While, Associate Dean (Education & External Affairs).
Summer School 2010 ‘Historical and Comparative Nursing’ is a three week programme offered on either a credit or non-credit basis with 15 UK academic credits awarded to students following successful assessment of a reflective journal.
Participants in the programme will gain an enhanced understanding of current UK nursing practice and policy – including new developments across different settings, the history of nursing and healthcare within London and differences between UK healthcare and abroad.
Delivered by an experienced academic faculty, many of whom are world leaders in their field, one third of the programme will be classroom-based at King’s College London and two thirds will be spent ‘in the field’ exploring history.
You have the opportunity to walk the streets of London visiting a number of interesting locations and attractions relevant to the history of nursing and modern healthcare. Visits will include Embley Park in Hampshire, a former home of Florence Nightingale.
Free time is included in the programme so students experience London’s cultural richness with its countless theatres, cafes, live music venues, cinemas, street markets, festivals, sporting events and clubs. Attractions such as the Houses of Parliament, Hyde Park, the London Eye, Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre, Borough Market and the Tower of London are all within easy reach of students’ central London accommodation.
Students have the option of staying in University of London intercollegiate halls of residence in Central London. These halls are situated near major public transport hubs, restaurant and shopping districts and are only a short walk away from major attractions such as Oxford Street, Covent Garden, the British Museum and London’s Theatre districts.
