St. George’s University in
Grenada, West Indies, opened as the first private medical school in the
Caribbean in 1977, and in the intervening years has drawn medical
students from 140 countries to its dynamic international programme.
Almost 1,700 faculty members recruited from across the world teach in
the School of Medicine, exposing students to the best of the world’s
education models. St. George’s School of Medicine has been accredited
and/or approved by many external bodies -- perhaps more than any
programme in medicine in the world. The School has contributed
almost 11,000 physicians to the world, and they have practised medicine
in over 45 countries.
Programmme Possibilities
The School of Medicine
offers a four- to seven-year programme leading to the Doctor of
Medicine degree. Students are placed into the first, second, or third
year of the premedical programme according to their academic
background. Students who successfully complete the premedical programme
are then promoted into the first year of the four-year Doctor of
Medicine degree programme.
UK students complete Basic
Sciences study in Grenada before undertaking Clinical Science study in
the network of over 60 affiliated hospitals and clinical centres
throughout the United Kingdom and the United States.
The School of Medicine also offers a variety of dual-degree programs, including the MD/MBA and the MD/MPH. The School’s Public Health
programme is one of only five non-US programmes to receive
accreditation by the US Council on Education for Public Health.
Campus and Grenada Life
The main campus of St. George’s University
overlooks the Caribbean Sea in the southwestern corner of Grenada. Over
70 buildings were constructed in a major expansion over the last ten
years and students enjoy all the amenities of modern campus life
in the middle of a tropical paradise. Over 2,000 students live on
campus and others live in the surrounding neighborhoods, which are
served by the University-provided free bus transportation. Beyond the
50+ student clubs and organizations, the small, welcoming island of
Grenada offers recreational activities common to tropical environments,
including scuba diving, sailing, cricket, and hiking.
A Dedication to Student Success
The University’s dedicated Department of Educational Services
teaches students how to learn and teachers how to teach. This unusual
and highly effective faculty is the largest on campus, and is an
important component of our students’ and graduates’ successes. Close to
100% of the University’s students and many of the professors in all
schools avail themselves of the support offered through a variety of
its innovative programmes.
