Why study at a medical college in Australia?

Besides amazing weather, scenery and wildlife, Australia offers medical students hundreds of institutions and dozens of medical programs to choose from. Australia offers both undergraduate and graduate level medical programs, with attendant specialist courses if you wish to continue your education further.
 
All Australian medical colleges will require you to sit a selection test before being admitted to a course. The most popular test is the Graduate Australian Medical School Admissions Test (GAMSAT).   


What medical programs are offered in Australia?

 
Medical programs in Australia are taught at both undergraduate and postgraduate level. Undergraduate programs typically last between 5-6 years, while graduate program take four years to complete. After qualifying with either an MBBS or MD, students can go on to take various specialist courses to train in a particular area of medicine.

Immigration and visas in Australia

In order to study at a medical college in Australia, you will need to acquire a student visa. This visa will allow you to study at an Australian institution and work unlimited hours whilst completing your medical program, and will also allow dependent family members to accompany you whilst you are in the country.

In order to obtain your student visa you will need to pay a visa charge at your nearest Australian Embassy, where you will also have to present:

  • A completed form 157A
  • The confirmation letter from the university where you will be studying
  • Four recent passport sized photographs
  • Copies of passport pages
  • Evidence that you have Overseas Student Health Cover for as long as you will be in the county

What are the costs of studying at a medical college in Australia?

Medical tuition fees in Australia vary depending on the course and institution you choose to study at. International students will normally pay significantly more than home students. As a guide, you can expect to pay anywhere from AUD$40,000 – 100,000 for a medical program in Australia.

Working in Australia

The Australian government regularly publishes a Skilled Occupations List (SOL), which features jobs that are of medium to high demand in the country. These are the jobs that are of the most value to the Australian economy, and if you are skilled in one of these areas you are much more likely to be granted permission to work in the country.

The extensive list can be found on the Australian Government Department of Immigration and Citizenship website, but medicine and related subjects are normally in high demand.
