Why study at a medical college in New Zealand?

New Zealand is home to two universities with medical faculties, but actually has four schools of medicine. You can study medicine in New Zealand at either the University of Auckland based on the north island, or the University of Otago on the south, with each offering two medical colleges.

What medical programs are offered in New Zealand?

You can study a full range of medical degrees in New Zealand, with the six year undergraduate Bachelor of Medicine the most popular with international students. You can expect to spend the first year of your program studying health sciences, before moving onto basic biomedical sciences study in the second and third year.

The second half of your degree will focus on clinical study in hospital wards, general practice and other community settings. From here, you can take electives and extra courses to specialise in a particular form of medicine.

Immigration and visas in New Zealand

International students planning to study full time medical programs for more than three months will need a student visa and a student permit, unless your home country has a special agreement with New Zealand.

Contact the New Zealand embassy in the country you live in for details of how to obtain your visa and permit. You will have to meet certain health requirements and pay a fee to apply.

Studying medicine in New Zealand can be costly, with tuition fees payable each year. Fees get more expensive each year as you move through the medical system in New Zealand and it isn’t uncommon for international students to pay more than NZD$100,000 throughout the  course of your study.

New Zealand is a popular country for immigrants from Asia, the UK and Europe, and many medical professionals look to settle in New Zealand once they complete their studies.
