Studying Medicine in Australia

Australia is a land of contrasts: sweeping golden beaches, coral reefs rich with marine life, tropical rainforests, mountain ranges, vast grazing lands and sparse deserts. It has the third largest number of international students in the English-speaking world behind the USA and UK. In some countries Australia is the students' first choice study destination.

Australian qualifications and institutions are recognised globally for their high quality and excellence. Graduates from Australia are very successful in finding jobs and hold prominent positions worldwide. Additionally, they are readily accepted for postgraduate study at leading international universities. Multicultural

Australia is a safe, friendly, sophisticated and harmonious society in which students can learn and travel in an English speaking country.
Australia also offers excellent value for money and a standard of living which is among the highest in the world. Living expenses and tuition costs in Australia are considerably less expensive than the UK and USA.

"Australia is an international leader in safeguards and support services for international students. Specialist services for international students are well resourced, quality assured and can be enjoyed in a safe and welcoming society."

Among the excellent range of services supporting the personal and academic achievements of international students in Australia are:

  • language tuition
  • designated international student advisers
  • application and visa-processing assistance
  • on-arrival reception and orientation programmes
  • health, counselling, accommodation and employment service

Accommodation options
A variety of high standard student accommodation is available to suit different budgets and needs. Students can opt to live in university accommodation or with an Australian family. Shared accommodation with other students is common and popular.

Institutions provide students with help in finding accommodation and understanding lease and tenancy conditions. Temporary accommodation can be arranged before you leave home allowing you time on arrival to consider where and how you would like to be accommodated in the longer term. Student noticeboards and newspapers often advertise rooms, apartments and houses for rent.

Medical Education in Australia
Medical Education in Australia has undergone changes in the past decade that are similar to those seen in many other medical schools, with earlier contact with patients, the use of problem-based curricula, self directed learning and increasing emphasis on community-based education a medicine moves increasingly out of hospital mode, especially for disorders of the aging.

Medical education standards are overseen by the Australian Medical Council. It accredits medical schools and assures standards in that role. It is also responsible for the oversight of registration of oversea-trained doctors.

To gain entry to Australian medical schools you are advised to access their websites as each one is different. Some of the undergraduate schools use a common moderating examination UMAT (Undergraduate Medical and Health Sciences Admissions Test) while entry to the graduate programs requires successful completion of GAMSAT (Graduate Australian Medical School Admission Test). Entry increasingly is being modified by what is found at interview with the prospective student.
